GWM

Game With Me was an app for finding people to play with. Mudasar, our founder, built it alone at 14, and kept rebuilding and running it, still alone, for years after. You set up a profile with the games you play and where you play them, filter for players who match, add them and start chatting.

The idea

GWM let you look for players who play the same games on the same platform, around your age and in your part of the world, and talk to them before jumping into a game together.

What it did

  • A profile with your age and region, the games you play and the platform each one is on, plus your Steam, PSN, Xbox Live, Origin and Uplay names.
  • Search by game, platform, age range, region and gender, or look someone up by username.
  • Friend requests, a close friends list and thumbs ups, with blocking and reporting to keep things civil.
  • One-to-one and group chat with photos and typing indicators.
  • Check in with what you're playing and until when, and your close friends get a notification.
  • Link your Steam profile to show the games you own.
  • Eight colour themes.

One person, start to finish

Mudasar built the first version of GWM alone at 14, as three separate apps: Swift for iPhone, Java for Android and Angular for the web. Every feature had to be written three times.

Over the years that followed, Mudasar folded them into one React Native app for iPhone and Android and moved the web app to React, still single-handed. One codebase meant a fix or a new feature landed everywhere at once.

Years of upkeep

The React Native version ran from 2018 to 2024, through new phones and new versions of iOS and Android. Along the way it picked up Sign in with Apple and Google, a move to newer push notifications, and over-the-air updates for quick fixes. It reached version 3.0.

Where it is now

GWM isn't maintained any more and has been taken out of the app stores. The website is still up as it was at launch.
